His coaching career began with the Colts in 2006 when he was hired as an intern before being promoted to offensive assistant and later quarterbacks coach.

Reich's hire ends a whirlwind coaching search for the Colts after New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels withdrew from an announced agreement become the team's head coach on Tuesday. He was said to be a top choice to be the Colts offensive coordinator under McDaniels, and that might still be the case under Reich.

According to the NFL Network, Eagles offensive coordinator Frank Reich agreed to terms on a five-year contract to the Indianapolis Colts' new head coach.

Despite the ugliness of the McDaniels situation, Colts general manager Chris Ballard still went through with a previously scheduled press conference on Wednesday that was originally supposed to include McDaniels. "Frank has all the ingredients of a successful head coach: intelligence, innovation, character, organizational and leadership skills and a commanding presence". He also has a stellar reputation, and his myriad of life experiences and the people he has worked with make him the flawless fit for us and our fans.

Offensive coordinator Frank Reich of the Philadelphia Eagles speaks to the media during Super Bowl LII media availability on February 1, 2018 at Mall of America in Bloomington, Minnesota. Two in-house options could be running backs coach Duce Staley for the offensive coordinator spot, and wide receivers coach Mike Groh for the quarterbacks spot.

Reich also had a stop with the Cardinals and was the Chargers OC from 2014-15. The Colts will have about $85 million in salary-cap space and the No. 3 overall pick in the April draft.

Reich has the challenge of coaching quarterback Andrew Luck, who missed the entire 2017 season due to a nagging shoulder injury, back to his form before the injury. Luck, who has not thrown a football since the middle of October, is now in southern California working with a throwing expert. "He's not going to skip a step. We want our team to match what he has inside". He reportedly signed a five-year contract.
