Fiji win Vancouver Sevens, close in on South Africa

England led 14-7 at halftime and went on with it after the break in a five tries to two victory.

The Gareth Baber-coached side is still in contention to win the series title after they closed the gap on South Africa.

Kenya had won only once before in four finals appearances, beating Fiji in Singapore past year.

With a more secure stream of possession in the second half it was able to give full vent to its attacking game and scored three more tries while holding Kenya scoreless.

"After a disappointing game for us against Kenya in the quarter-final we found ourselves up against New Zealand again", said captain Tom Mitchell.

Canada gave the home crowd much to cheer about at BC Place, battling hard to open their account with a 19-19 draw against Australia and a narrow 28-21 loss to Las Vegas champions US in the last play of the second half.

New Zealand and Fiji emerged from pool play unbeaten Saturday, on the opening day of the on the opening day of the World Rugby Sevens Series Vancouver stop.

Shujaa started on a winning note in Vancouver, Canada, beating France 14-7, then thrashing Spain 43-0 and qualifying for the main cup quarterfinals despite losing 24-21 to Fiji in their last pool match.

South Africa retains the lead in the World Series after six of 10 rounds. Fiji (101 points) now sit eight points behind leaders South Africa (109) and nine points ahead of third-placed New Zealand (92).

The next tournament takes place in Hong Kong April 6th-8th, 2018.
