Gauri Lankesh murder case: SIT gets 5-day custody of Naveen Kumar

Naveen's capture is the first in the Lankesh kill case, and comes days after state Home Minister Ramalinga Reddy said the SIT would soon eliminate any confusion air about the speculate who had been arrested.

According to the charge sheet, Naveen Kumar is not the No 1 accused in the case.

Gauri Lankesh was a respected senior journalist and a well-known critic of right-wing forces.

Bengaluru, Mar 9 (UNI) The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has formally arrested a gunrunner arrested by the Karnataka police earlier for his alleged involvement of killing Journalist-Activist Gauri Lankesh in the city a year ago. SIT produced him before the court today where he was remanded to five days police custody till 13th this month.

The Karnataka government had set up the SIT to probe the journalist-activist's killing.

The SIT also charged Kumar with plotting to assassinate Mysuru-based writer and rationalist K S Bhagawan.

Gauri, 55, was the outspoken editor of Gauri Lankesh Patrike, which was known for its frank editorials.

The SIT has indicated that the two were involved in scoping out Lankesh's home, as also pointing it out to an unidentified assailant, wearing a helmet, who arrived at the gate of Lankesh's house with an unidentified accomplice on a motorcycle on the evening of September 5 previous year and shot her. He is reportedly linked to the Sanatan Sanstha outfit and its affiliate the Hindu Janajagruti Samiti. The investigations in the Upparpet case has shown that Kumar, during conversations about guns and ammunition with some of his friends from Maddur, alluded to his links to the murder of Lankesh. "Naveen also had a few links with people in Belagavi who are alleged to be arms dealers and it has led us to bring him there", a police source said.

The SIT has made a decision to transfer the case of Kumar's plot to eliminate K S Bhagawan to the Mysuru police.

Police are trying to verify whether Kumar was seen on CCTV cameras conducting a recce on a motorcycle around the journalist-activist's home the day she was shot down.
