With courts unlikely to rule definitively on immigration before summer, and the case expected to head to the Supreme Court after that, Congress is not expected to act before the mid-term elections in November.
It's been six months since President Donald Trump moved to end a program that protected young undocumented immigrants from deportation, and Washington seems to be no closer to a resolution on the day everything was supposed to be solved by.
"Without a permanent solution, Trump's cruel and reckless decision will tear more families apart, shatter communities, drive immigrants into the shadows, and make us all less safe as a result", Democratic National Committee chairman Tom Perez said in a statement.
"March 5 is the deadline Trump gave the Congress to act and they haven't done anything", Bruna Bouhid, a 26-year-old student and Dreamer from Tampa, told AFP as she and others marched from the Washington Mall to the US Capitol.
President Trump has been pushing for Congress to take over the program, but the Senate and the House have failed to agree on new legislation the president would sign. On Feb. 26, the U.S. Supreme Court denied the administration's unusual request to intervene, which would have leapfrogged the appeals court.

President Donald Trump also warned of a " phase two " that could be " very, very unfortunate for the world " if the steps did not work.

The Department of Homeland Security must continue processing DACA renewal applications during that time.
They are campaigning against the March 5th deadline but some said the deadline may not hold much weight because two separate district courts are requiring that DACA permits be renewed - indefinitely.
A total of 13,090 DACA permits are set to expire in March, according to Citizenship and Immigration Services.
That means tens of thousands of DACA enrollees may lose their DACA protections while they wait for their renewals to go through. Deportation arrests have surged more than 40 percent under Trump. Shortly after taking office, Trump changed the approach, allowing ICE agents to pick up any undocumented immigrants they encounter in their day-to-day lives. To qualify, they needed to have arrived before their 16th birthday, been under 31 in June 2012, completed high school or served in the military, and have clean criminal records.
