U.S. President Donald Trump called Russian President Vladimir Putin and congratulated him on winning his fourth term as president of Russia.

He also described a call he made to Putin to congratulate him on his reelection.

He also said they "will probably get together in the not-too-distant future" to talk about the worldwide arms race and other mutual concerns, such as the war in Syria and North Korea's development of nuclear weapons.

The report cited officials familiar with the call, who said that Trump allegedly chose to ignore the warning and also did not listen to aides who instructed Trump to condemn Russian Federation on using a nerve agent in the U.K. Trump also did not bring up Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told members of the press, CNN reported.

The president's tone drew a rebuke from Sen.

But former Republican presidential candidate John McCain blasted: "An American president does not lead the Free World by congratulating dictators on winning sham elections".

The White House press office declined to comment on the briefing materials given to Trump.

During Tuesday's White House press briefing, Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders was asked if the topic of Saudi Arabia's human rights violations came up during Trump's meeting with the crown prince.

United Kingdom and European Union agree Brexit transition deal
Dublin said it was happy to accept as it bound London in to not "backsliding" on pledges May had made on the issue in December. Her Democratic Unionist Party allies said the "announcement" did not concern them as it left the border issue unresolved.

The flap comes as Donald Trump continues to fight off allegations that his campaign colluded with Russian Federation during the 2016 election.

Sanders told reporters that Trump also didn't raise the issues of election meddling or Russia's allegedly tainted voting process.

Trump talked to reporters about the call with Putin, saying it was "very good".

"The leaders spoke in favour of developing practical cooperation in different spheres, including on questions of how to ensure strategic stability and fight worldwide terrorism", the Kremlin said in a statement.

Trump added the arms race between the USA and Russian Federation "is getting out of control. but we will never allow anybody to have anything close to what we have".

While many world leaders, including German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emanuel Macron, wasted little time in contacting Putin following the March 18 vote, Trump's silence was seen as a show of the tense state of relations between the two countries. "Russian relations", the Kremlin statement said according to The Washington Post. Russian Federation has denied the accusation.

The White House said Trump limited conversation to "shared topics" on which the United States and Russian Federation could find common ground, like Ukraine, Syria, and North Korea. They met on the sidelines of an global summit in Germany last summer and again more informally at another gathering of world leaders in Vietnam in November. Three of Trump's associates - former national security adviser Michael Flynn, deputy campaign chairman Rick Gates and campaign aide George Papadopoulos - have pleaded guilty to lying to investigators and agreed to cooperate.
