Israel has faced worldwide condemnation for its response to Palestinian demonstrations at the border.

Malaysian authorities said two men on a high-powered motorcycle fired at least 14 shots at Batsh, an engineering lecturer, outside his Kuala Lumpur apartment building on Saturday, killing him on the spot.

A report in The New York Times Thursday claimed that the elimination of Hamas engineer Fadi al-Batsh is part of a long-running campaign directed by Israel's Mossad to destroy Hamas's "brain trust" - a group of educated professionals and academics who work overseas on projects directed by the terror group, and who submit their work to Hamas, which uses it to attack Israel.

Malaysia's deputy prime minister said the two suspects were believed to be linked to a foreign intelligence service.

Thousands of people, led by Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh, are taking part in the funeral of Hamas engineer Fadi al-Batsh in northern Gaza.

The corpse of al-Batsh was received on Thursday at Rafah crossing point between southern Gaza Strip and Egypt. Hamas has confirmed Batsh was a member, but has not specified what role he had in the movement.
