A month after his security status was downgraded, it was revealed that the special counsel investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 United States presidential election, Robert Mueller, had taken an interest in Kushner's business affairs, including his attempts to gain refinancing of his family's flagship property at 666 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan from foreign entities. That first session was reportedly limited to questions about former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn, who later was charged with lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Abbe Lowell, a personal attorney for Kushner, said in a statement: "With respect to the news about his clearances, as we stated before, his application was properly submitted, reviewed by numerous career officials and underwent the normal process".

Kushner failed to disclose those meetings on his initial applications for security clearance, raising concerns about attempts to hide them.

"In each occasion, he answered all questions asked and did whatever he could to expedite the conclusion of all the investigation", Lowell said.

"Having completed all of these processes, he's looking forward to continuing to do the work the president has asked him to do".

Giuliani also urged the swift wrapping of the probe in the backdrop of former FBI Director James Comey revelation in the last days of the 2016 presidential race that he was reopening the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email server, according to several media reports.

Senior adviser Jared Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump arrive for news conference with President Donald Trump and German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the East Room of the White House in Washington, Friday, March 17, 2017.

The shake-up was a part of a White House overhaul of security clearance procedures brought on by the controversy over Rob Porter, the former White House staff secretary who was operating on a temporary security clearance despite accusations of domestic violence.

Lowell said Kushner has been voluntarily cooperating with Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

"I would say it is the definition of cooperation", Lowell said, pointing to Kushner's willingness to provide documents to the special counsel and to return for another interview when Mueller's team requested one. That meant Kushner was able to see information only at the lower "secret" level, but not highly classified information.

The resolution of his clearances does not guarantee that Mr. Kushner faces no legal jeopardy.
