Speaking to reporters after his Washington visit, Macron said, "My view - I don't know what your president will decide - is that he will get rid of this deal on his own for domestic reasons".

"Progress" is being made to keep the United States in the Iran nuclear deal, British Ambassador to the U.S. Kim Darroch told CBS's "Face the Nation" on Sunday.

Why are there differences among the allies?

Iranian president says Tehran is ready to confront any decision by Trump, who said he would withdraw from the agreement.

But Trump has said he is unhappy with the terms and accuses Iran of violating the spirit of the accord by supporting militant activity in the Middle East and by continuing to test ballistic missiles.

"We are honouring our commitment, but we are telling the whole world we will not negotiate with anyone about our weapons and our defence".

Writing in the New York Times, Johnson described the deal as a means to "counter Tehran's aggressive regional behaviour" and urged Trump to "improve the handcuffs" on Iran "rather than break them".

French president Emmanuel Macron and German chancellor Angela Merkel have also visited the White House as part of a last-ditch effort to alter the Republican's mind on the agreement. In the past, European negotiators have said that there are opportunities to tweak the deal so that missile tests are limited and banned.

While the May 12 deadline has been portrayed as a yes-or-no decision for Trump, it's not that simple.

Rouhani did not specify how Iran would react if the USA pulls out of the deal.

"If they want to make sure that we are not after a nuclear bomb, we have said repeatedly that we are not and we will not be. but if they want to weaken Iran and limit its influence whether in the region or globally, Iran will fiercely resist", Rouhani said in a speech broadcast live on state television.

He is motivated by his campaign promises to cancel Obama's health care programme which benefits 20 million impecunious U.S. citizens; impose tariffs on imported steel and other items which, he alleges, put United States workers out of their jobs; and pull the USA out of the Paris climate agreement which sets limits on polluting emissions which are damaging our planet and threatening human existence.

Netanyahu said that the deal was "fatally flawed on weaponisation", referring to the military application of Iran's enriched uranium, and that the documents proved it was based on a lie. He was one of the key figures in planning and reaching the Iran deal.

Under the 2015 deal brokered by President Barack Obama and other world powers, Iran agreed to nuclear restrictions in exchange for billions in sanctions relief.

Under the deal, officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), Iran is committed to slashing the number of its centrifuges, which are machines used to enrich uranium.

Johnson said that the 2015 agreement "has helped to avoid a possible catastrophe".
