Alex Ovechkin had a power-play goal and an assist in his Eastern Conference finals debut, leading the Washington Capitals to a 4-2 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning on Monday night.

Game 2 is Sunday night at Amalie Arena.

"We want to do the same next game and for the whole series".

Jay Beagle - The Capitals checking centre struggled in terms of puck possession (7 for, 11 against, 38.9 CF%,), but also scored Washington's third goal, his first goal since the first game of the playoffs. Led by Nikita Kucherov and Steven Stamkos, the Bolts shot through a talented Bruins team in the second round - and made it look easy, closing out the series with four consecutive wins.

"By a mile", captain Steven Stamkos noted.

Tampa Bay replaced goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy with Louis Domingue after the starter allowed four goals on 25 shots through two periods.

The Lightning appeared to find their legs in the third period with Stamkos and Ondrej Palat each scoring a goal, but it wasn't enough. He wired home a one-timer off a cross-ice Kucherov feed at 3:45. The goaltending change brought life to the Lightning as they picked up two goals in the third.

Tampa Bay needed nine minutes to get a shot on Holtby.

NHL:

Ovechkin tallied his ninth goal of the postseason with just over five seconds remaining in the first period.

The Washington Capitals came out strong in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final. Backstrom is considered doubtful after he sat out Monday's Game 6 in the second round and hasn't practiced since.

Still, all Tampa Bay had to do was make a play. On the ensuing faceoff, Ovechkin wired a quick pass from Kuznetsov past a stunned Vasilevskiy with 5.3 seconds to go in the first.

Beagle and Eller scored slightly more than four minutes apart in the second period. But the chance was created by Ovechkin, who shot a one-timer that deflected over to T.J. Oshie and then to Eller.

"I view it as a two-year window", general manager Brian MacLellan said of the Capitals' chance of winning the Stanley Cup during the 2015-2016 season. To show Washington's domination, 11 others were blocked and five missed the net. The sellout streak is at 155 games.

Backstrom scored 20 goals with 51 assists this season, and he's a key piece of Washington's top power-play unit along with killing penalties. C Nicklas Backstrom did not dress. LW Andre Burakovsky (upper-body injury) returned to the lineup.

Expect the Lightning to forgo cocktails and get straight to the shots in Game 2.
