Subtropical Storm Alberto Forms in Caribbean, Will Drench Miami All Weekend

Portions of the northern Gulf Coast are likely to experience tropical storm force winds and storm surge. For the fourth consecutive time, Hurricane Season will start with a name already checked off before June 1st.

It's now a 40-mph storm located about 60 miles south of Cozumel, Mexico, according to the hurricane center's 2 p.m. Friday update. If the storm goes east of the projected track, the impacts will lessen.

The flood watch runs from 8 a.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday, the period when Alberto is expected to pass closest to the region on its course toward the northern Gulf coast. "Gradual strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, with little change in strength forecast on Monday", according to the advisory from the Hurricane Center.

Alberto is forecast to make landfall somewhere along the north central Gulf Coast from Louisiana to the Florida panhandle threatening very heavy to extreme rainfall.

Heavy rain will likely begin to affect the central Gulf Coast region and the southeastern USA later this weekend and continue into early next week.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration on Thursday released its forecast for the 2018 hurricane season, predicting 10 to 16 named storms, with five to nine hurricanes.

The Government of Cuba has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for the western Cuban province of Pinar del Rio.

"Its mostly looking like a heavy rain event", National Weather Service meteorologist John McMichael said. Winds will calm down on Memorial Day as Alberto moves onshore far to our north. Beach threat is rip currents and coastal flooding from higher water levels.
