The "block 5" version of the craft features a number of design changes the company claims will improve performance and safety.

The launch was halted after a last-minute automatic abort, Spaceflight Now reported.

The plan is to launch the first stage 10 times without needing refurbishment, just some minimal inspection before returning the rocket to the launchpad. The geostationary satellite, named Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman after the country's founding father, weighs over 3500 kilograms and will carry 40 Ku and C-band transponders which will help in direct-to-home transmission and provide V-sat services to Bangladesh and its neighbouring countries.

It targets the launch at 4:42pm Eastern Daylight Time on Thursday or 2:42am on Friday in Bangladesh, the private space flight and technology company said in a Twitter message around two hours before the launch. SpaceX recently got a permit to begin constructing the first BFR spaceships in the Port of Los Angeles, about a dozen miles south of the company's headquarters. Weather conditions are forecast to be 80 percent go.

Just about a minute before scheduled lift-off at 5:47 p.m. EDT, the launch computer aborted blast-off shortly after it entered its startup mode.

The Block 5 has a slew of upgrades, such as improvements to the rocket's heat shield, additional thermal protection coating to prevent heat damage upon re-entry into the earth's atmosphere and retractable landing legs. SpaceX is clearly trying to cut down the amount of time between when a rocket is first launched and when its first stage (and second stage, down the line) can be launched again.
