Tech billionaire Elon Musk says he has been building a "tiny, kid-size submarine" with "feedback from Thailand" in an effort to rescue 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped in a cave.

Twelve boys and their coach, who had been missing since last month, were found by a pair of British cave divers late Monday. It remains unclear whether Musk's submarine will be used to aid retrieval of the team but the SpaceX CEO also suggests the submarine could be modified for use as an "escape pod in space."

He has now designed a plan to help save the boys, and he said engineers from his companies would travel to Thailand on Saturday.

Musk, who studied physics, has floated a number of ideas on Twitter on how to bring the stranded team to safety.

"Continue to be amazed by the bravery, resilience and tenacity of the kids and diving team in Thailand", Musk later tweeted.

Elon Musk says he is "happy to help" with the rescue of the Thai soccer team now stuck inside a cave. He's promising that the sub would be "extremely robust" - small enough to get through the tight cave network, and light enough to be carried by two divers. Time is of the essence as concerns mount over depleting oxygen levels and pending heavy rains. After Puerto Rico was devastated by a massive hurricane previous year, Musk sent Tesla Powerwall batteries and offered solar services to help rebuild the island's electrical grid.

When asked if a rescue attempt would be made overnight if it started to rain, he said: "No, the boys can't dive at this time".

Musk said his Boring Co., whose main mission is to dig tunnels for transport systems, and SpaceX, will send engineers to Thailand on Saturday to assist with the rescue effort.

Musk added on Friday that his engineers will have to assess the "many complexities" of the situation further in person.

The billionaire behind the Tesla vehicle and the SpaceX rocket company, had said he would send engineers to help. The team has been trapped in the cave for two weeks.
