Israel agrees to cease-fire with Hamas

A wave of Israeli strikes on the Gaza Strip throughout Saturday that have killed two people were the biggest since a 2014 war in the Hamas-run Palestinian enclave, an air force official said.

In Israel, air raid sirens sent people rushing to shelters in areas surrounding the Gaza Strip as rockets and mortars were fired from the Palestinian enclave at nearby communities.

The United Nations' Middle East envoy Nickolay Mladenov was in Gaza and "working with all concerned parties to de-escalate the situation", a UN official said on condition of anonymity. Meanwhile, the military says an Israeli officer was lightly wounded by a grenade thrown at him during the near-weekly protests along the border Friday.

Israel's armed forces said dozens of strikes targeted military facilities belonging to the Gaza Strip's Islamist rulers Hamas, against which it has fought three wars over the past decade.

Since then Gaza militants launched aound 60 rockets and mortars into Israel, causing minor damage to a synagogue and reportedly wounding two Israelis who are not in a critical state.

A senior Israeli defence official said: 'Only the facts on the ground will dictate our further response'.

The Israeli army said its jets targeted complexes used to prepare attacks and a "Hamas terror training facility".

"In addition, a weapons manufacturing site and storage facilities housing various types of weapons, including Hamas' naval capabilities, were struck", it said.

Two Palestinian teenagers were killed in an airstrike in Gaza City, while three Israelis were wounded from a rocket that landed on a residential home.

On Friday, thousands of Palestinians gathered near the Gaza border for their near-weekly protest. Hellis was killed on Friday at a border protest. Around 15,000 protesters have been injured since March 30.

Witnesses say Israeli warplanes dropped four bombs on an empty building near a Hamas police and security compound, reducing the old structure to rubble.

The first tunnel was located in the south of the Strip inside Palestinian territory opposite Kerem Shalom, while a second tunnel in northern Gaza was hit early Saturday morning.
