SC dismisses review petition of Nirbhaya rape case accused; upholds death penalty

Bollywood actresses like Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Bhumi Pednekar hailed the Supreme Court's verdict to uphold the death sentence to four convicts who gangraped and murdered a young Delhi professional in 2012.

On 5 May, 2017 a full bench comprising chief justice of India Dipak Misra along with justices R. Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan upheld the death penalty amid spontaneous applause.

A three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra, maintained that a review of the Supreme Court's verdict of May 5 previous year would have been necessary only if there were "errors resulting in miscarriage of justice".
