Wearing a "Rise and Resist" T-shirt, Okoumou spent almost four hours on the statue, the fabled symbol of welcome to immigrants in NY harbor, forcing police into a unsafe retrieval mission and causing the evacuation of Liberty Island on Wednesday.
Police in NY were responding Wednesday afternoon to a woman climbing the Statue of Liberty.
Although Okoumou was wearing a Rise and Resist shirt and is a member, the group claimed her actions were not related and that it was not aware of her plans.
On June 28, hundreds of women activists marched from Washington D.C.'s Freedom Plaza to Capitol Hill to protest Trump's "zero tolerance" policy and to call for ICE to be abolished. Officers, using ladders, had climbed within a few feet of her and were negotiating with her.
As they approached, she initially moved away, took off her shoes and appeared to be starting to climb further. Video shows her walking, sitting and lying down on different parts of the statue's base near the foot and robes.
They hooked her into a harness before making their way down. People on their way to Liberty Island are not being allwed to continue and the people on the island are being evacuated.

Okoumou is charged with trespassing, interference with national park regulations and disorderly conduct. She has been arrested while protesting at least once before, in 2017, and works as a personal trainer and physical therapist, the New York Daily News reported.

Okoumou was scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate for an arraignment hearing, a spokesman for the United States attorney's office in Manhattan said.
Police say Okoumou also has a prior arrest from a protest previous year. He said federal rules do not allow banners to hang at the monument, which is run by the park service.
