A person who answered the phone at Sirens, the strip club where Daniels performed, declined to comment.

Avenatti said Clifford was arrested in Columbus Ohio while performing an act in a strip club that she had performed across the United States.

Ohio's Community Defense Act prohibits touching a nude or semi-nude dancer in a club, besides members of the dancer's immediate family.

She was released on bail before 6:00am (local time) - court records show Daniels posted $US6,000 ($8,112).

Daniels's lawyer, Michael Avenatti, says on Twitter that she will plead not guilty to all counts and has said the touching was in a "non sexual" way.

"This is ridiculous that law enforcement resources were used to conduct this sting operation", he said.

Mr Avenatti wrote: "This was a setup & politically motivated".

Columbus police said they have made numerous arrests based on this law since last fall when authorities "were made aware" of illegal activity at adult entertainment clubs in the city.

Video from local station 10TV showed Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, being marched into Jackson Pike Correctional Facility around 4.30am. The porn star, who allegedly had an affair with President Donald Trump in 2006 while he was married to Melania Trump, was reportedly taken into custody for behaving inappropriately while on stage.

Avenatti alleged that her arrest was "a politically motivated set up". He says they will fight all charges, which he called "bogus".

According to Sirens' website, Daniels was scheduled to perform Wednesday and Thursday night.

In April, Daniels filed suit in federal court in NY charging that Trump had defamed her.

Her initial lawsuit against Trump was for not signing their initial "hush agreement", and she insisted she only wanted to speak out about her affair, and so was attempting to find a way that would legally protect her in doing so.

Cohen allegedly paid Daniels $130,000 to keep quiet about her sexual encounter with Mr. Trump.

Representatives for the Columbus Division of Police did not immediately respond to ABC News' request for comment. The president has denied an affair occurred.
