This gold processor is the big question mark in the whole Surface Go idea as we are yet to see whether it will be powerful enough to drive demanding Windows applications.
Yet, breaking into the consumer market with a gadget we all use on a daily basis-meaning, a smartphone or a consumer tablet-has proved a bit elusive.
Panos Panay, chief product officer for Microsoft, said: "Surface Go is small and mighty, giving you the performance you need to be productive". Its performance wasn't wonderful, but it was good enough for most common productivity tasks. While Microsoft clearly has at least one eye on the education market with the Surface Go, it's not aiming there exclusively; Surface Go is also being positioned as a fine home device or a business tool.
One thing that wasn't true about the leaks is that the base model does not come with a Pentium Silver processor, or a Pentium Gold 4410Y for that matter. That's a 6W dual-core (hyperthreaded) chip that's built on the 14nm Kaby Lake architecture, and it should be clocked at 1.6GHz.
The new lightweight Surface Go - about twice as big as many smartphones - is created to be portable. That means that there won't be any fancy colors; it will only be in platinum. The USB-C port can be used for charging the tablet as well as connecting other USB-C devices.

On a portable the port choice is crucial and Microsoft has provided USB-C 3.1 for data, video, and charging; a headphone jack; and a MicroSD card reader - as well as the Surface Connect for charging and docking.
Today Microsoft emphasised the importance of being able to run Office software on the Surface Go in an effort to appeal to students. It will initially be WiFi only, but Microsoft promises an LTE variant for the future. At the $399 base, you'll get 4GB of RAM and 64GB of eMMC storage.
The includes the new Alcantara Surface Keyboard covers, which bring the soft (and hard to keep clean) material based keyboards from the Surface Laptop to the tablet line. The existing Surface Pen works with this device and you can opt for the Type Cover at $99 or a Signature Type Cover at $129.99. That keyboard will be available in platinum, burgundy and cobalt blue.
The tablets will be available in US stores beginning August 2. There is no indication if this will simply be a preorder phase for the tablet or if they will actually start shipping on 7/13. The company has, however, not disclosed when the tablet will launch in India. Pony up for the $549 8GB/ 128GB model, and you're starting to encroach on ultrabook territory.
