Caldwell is a native of the Windy City, and his brother survived a shooting a year ago that killed his best friend.

The shooting happened about 6:50 a.m.in the first block of North Leclaire, police said.

"Certainly CPD [Chicago Police Department] can do better but at the end of the day, the members of CPD don't go to bed with these individuals at night, they don't wake up with them in the morning", Mr Johnson said.

At one point, 40 people were shot in the span of seven hours, according to a tally compiled by the Chicago Tribune, with innocent bystanders as well as alleged gang members among the casualties.

Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie T. Johnson said during a news conference that police arrested 46 people over the weekend for gun charges and that they seized 60 guns over the weekend alone.

The police chief emphasized an oft-repeated criticism by city officials that repeat gun offenders receive sentences that are too short and are able to quickly return to the streets to commit more crimes - believing they will not face serious consequences. "And it might get worse because you can hear people talking about revenge, saying on their cell phones 'I know know who did it".

Of the wounded who reported an age, the oldest victim was 62 and the youngest was 11, CNN reported. They hold me accountable, they hold the mayor accountable, they hold the city council accountable - where's their accountability?

McCarthy announced this year that he plans to run for mayor next February against Democratic Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who fired McCarthy in 2015 after the release of dashcam video showing a white police officer shoot a black teenager 16 times.

Largest wildfires in California history
Officials have confirmed that six people, including two firefighters and a woman and her two great-grandchildren, have died. The worldwide fire teams were to arrive in Redding, California, on Monday, said Cal Fire Director Ken Pimlott.

Mr. Emanuel called on residents to "be a neighbor" and step forward if they knew anything about the perpetrators.

Experts say crime tends to pick up during the hot summer months, but Emanuel dismissed that.

Demonstrators took to the streets of Chicago last week to call for the Emanuel's resignation, blasting his administration for failing to curb the city's gun violence epidemic.

"There is a shortage of values about what is right, what is wrong", Emanuel told USA Today.

He said decisions by Chicago Democrats have resulted in people getting out of jail more easily.

Police on Monday attributed the dozens of shootings to gangs, the illegal flow of guns and sweltering August heat that drew more people outside.

The violence peaked early Sunday, including one shooting on the South Side that wounded eight people. Waller said shootings are down 30% from 2017, and murders are down 25%.

Johnson said that both murders and shootings are down on the year, but said this weekend showed there was still a lot to do.
