Half whale, half dolphin . . . just call me a wolphin

To make matters more jumbled, a melon-headed whale is one of the various species that is called a whale but is technically a dolphin.

So, the bad news is, we don't have a new species of whale-or dolphin-on our hands.

"I think calling it a wholphin just confuses the situation more than it already is".

A new species of aquatic mammal, a hybrid of a whale and a dolphin, has been identified in waters near Hawaii.

After all, individual hybrid cases are not usually officially recognized as new species since many hybrids are unable to reproduce.

Reports calling the hybrid animal a "wholphin" are false, scientists say.

The male "wholphin", which is believed to be close to adult age, was spotted swimming with dolphins near the island of Kauai previous year, according to Dr Robin Baird, the marine biologist who headed the expedition.

The cross appears to be the first instance of a wild-born hybrid between the two species. In the 11-day period, the scientists made hundreds of sightings of various species such as bottlenose dolphins, rough-toothed dolphins, sperm whales, and spinner dolphins.

Experts don't know how old it is but believe it's close to adult age.

Manyoutlets described the creature as a "wholphin".

The cross-species hybridization may seem weird, but is made possible by the fact that melon-headed whales aren't actually whales.

The team will be returning to Kauai's waters next month, when they hope to get more photos of the new hybrid whale-dolphin as well as further research on other species in the area.

A whale-dolphin hybrid was observed by scientists in Hawaii in August of past year.

From the Pacific Missile Range Facility range, the Navy were able to record acoustics of the animals in their habitat, which they were then able to pass over to Baird and his crew.

Scientists who found the specimen tracked numerous species during a study off the island of Kauai past year.

Audio recordings of the two species vocalizing were also achieved for the very first time. "It isn't and shouldn't be considered a new species", Robin Baird, a biologist with the research group, told HuffPost.

Two of the ocean's most beloved sea creatures morph into one wonderful animal, as a team of researchers discovered in the past year.

The odd pair and their closeness to the other dolphins have led the researchers to speculate that the accompanying melon-headed whale is the hybrid's mother.

Melon-headed whales, he explains, usually travel together in groups of around 250.
