Prosecutors for special counsel Robert Mueller said Mr. Papadopoulos lied to agents about his contacts with Russians during the campaign "to minimize both his own role as a witness and the extent of the campaign's knowledge of his contacts", according to the government's sentencing memorandum.
The only other defendant in the Russian Federation probe who has been sentenced is Dutch attorney Alexander Van der Zwaan. "The president of the United States hindered this investigation more than George Papadopoulos ever could".
Court documents say Papadopoulos worked to create a relationship between the campaign and the Kremlin after then-candidate Donald Trump secured the Republican nomination. The FBI, tipped off by the Australians, began looking into the matter.
George Papadopoulos, 31, told the court in Washington DC he was a "patriotic American" who made a mistake by lying.
"Despite constant attacks by the President and his allies, Special Counsel Robert Mueller and his team have once again demonstrated that they are conducting a serious, professional investigation into the Trump campaign's contacts with Russians during the 2016 election", Warner said in a statement.
Prosecutors argued that Papadopoulos' repeated lies during a January 2017 interview with investigators stymied the inquiry at a critical moment.
Papadopoulos was charged in July 2017. While Trump has the legal power to, and has said he feels he has the full right sack the special counsel, the probe continues and Mueller is still at its helm. Manafort faces a trial on separate charges in Washington this month.

Book by Woodward says Trump wanted Syrian leader killed
Mattis said he'd 'get right on it, ' but ordered limited airstrikes that didn't threaten Assad personally instead. Entitled " Fear: Trump in the White House,"the Woodward book is scheduled to be released September 11".
US District Judge Randolph Moss on Friday sentenced Papadopoulos to 14 days, noting that he "lied in an investigation that was important to national security".
Papadopolous will also have 12 months of supervised release, serve 200 hours of community service within about a year and will be fined $9,500.
"I saw him sitting in one picture at a table with me, that's the only thing I know about him", Trump said, referring to a widely circulated photo of Papadopoulos in a meeting with Trump and several other advisers. The judge had planned a harsher sentence but said he was moved by Papadopolous' words of contrition.
Outside court on Friday, Papadopoulos' lawyer, Thomas Breen, said his client was a "fool" and had acted "stupidly" in lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The punishment was far less than the maximum six-month sentence sought by the government but also more than the probation that Papadopoulos and his lawyers had asked for. He and his wife later participated in more media interviews.
Former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos has been sentenced to 14 days in prison for lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The president weighed in shortly after the sentence was handed down, scoffing in a tweet at the length and making an apparent reference to the cost of Mueller's investigation. He has charged a number of people with various offenses, including interference in United States elections, but none with colluding with Russian Federation.
