In a way, Inbox served as a testbed for future Gmail features. Inbox marked a clear departure from the aging design of Gmail, and focused on a mobile-first experience.

We introduced the new Gmail in April this year, incorporating numerous same features you've come to love about Inbox plus newer features like Smart Compose, which helps you draft emails faster.

Inbox, Google's innovative app for email, has received its death sentence.

In addition to the transition guide, Google also recently promoted five features in the new Gmail to entice Inbox fans. After that, you're free to delete the Gmail Offline Chrome app and then continue forward using only Gmail for web.

The page suggests alternatives for the Inbox features pin, bundles and reminders. You could just use the pre-loaded labels like updates, purchases, trips, and so on, but Inbox supported custom labels as well. With fewer unique features, Inbox doesn't have much reason to exist. What do you think of this move? Although, some of these are a stretch.

So, for those who got a lot of use out of Gmail Offline, this could be seen as the end of an era, but it makes sense that Google would want to consolidate users around Gmail for web instead of having them use a bunch of different apps. Having about six months of warning will give Inbox fans a chance to get their personal workflow going in Gmail, but it'll probably never be the same. The app which served as an experimental testbed for Gmail features as well as a streamlined email client for the service, has apparently outlived its welcome with the company. Maybe Inbox was doomed from the start, but erase the frustration of Inbox users on this sad day.
