A local man has died after being shot inside his own apartment by an off-duty Dallas police officer.

Police say that after the officer reported that she had shot Jean, she told officers who arrived at the scene that she had mistakenly entered his apartment, thinking it was hers.

The officer called 911 and authorities responded and took Jean to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Allie Jean, Jean's mother, said she wants transparency from the police officer who shot her son. It's not clear what the interaction was between her and the victim.

The officer, a five-year veteran who has not yet been publicly identified, has been placed on administrative leave, authorities said.

"We still have a lot to do in this investigation". Hall said at the press conference she doesn't know whether the officer knew Jean.

Hall also said the Texas Rangers will conduct an independent investigation of the incident. "We have ceased handling it under our normal protocol as an officer-involved shooting".

Brandt Jean answered the phone at home in St. Lucia when his mother called and asked to speak to his father alone. He often led the singing at the university chapel.

The Christian Chronicle reports that he is being remembered for his lovely singing voice - he often led songs during services - and the depth of his faith. Sources tell CBS 11 News reporter J.D. Miles that the officer had actually gone to the wrong floor and put her key in the lock, but it wouldn't turn. When he returned that night, he sang the song with grace and poise, as though he'd always known it.
