Storm surge of two to five feet is expected across the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Up to 8 inches of rain was expected to have covered parts of south Florida by Tuesday, with 1 to 2 inches projected around Tampa Bay, according to Norman, the National Weather Service meteorologist.

Hurricane Warnings and Tropical Storm Warnings have been issued for parts of the Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida coasts. It will reach the U.S. Gulf coast by Tuesday night at the latest, these areas include the popular cruise ports in New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama. Communities along the coast provided sand and bags, and many hustled to protect their properties ahead of the storm.

Gordon continued to weaken Wednesday after becoming a tropical depression as it made landfall near the Mississippi-Alabama border, the National Hurricane Center said.

The National Hurricane Centre in Miami said the storm was west-south-west of Marco Island, and maximum sustained winds were clocked at 50mph. Flash flood watches stretched from the Florida panhandle, through parts of southwest Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Iowa and IL. The storm is moving toward the northwest across the lower Mississippi Valley, bringing with it rain and potential flooding. The tropical storm continues to approach the Gulf Coast.

Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant declared a state of emergency as the storm bore down on his state's coast, as did Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey.

A storm surge covered barrier islands as the storm blew through, and some inland roadways were flooded by the rain. "Residents in those affected counties should also be prepared for tropical storm force winds and conditions that will favor isolated tornado threats not only along coastal counties but for South Mississippi in general." said MEMA Executive Director Greg Michel. The region could see rising waters of 3ft to 5ft.

It promised more of the same on a forecast track expected to take it northeast into Arkansas, which was forecast to get heavy rain from the system by Wednesday night.

A Tropical Storm Warning means that tropical storm conditions are expected somewhere within the warning areas.

If it strengthens, Gordon would become the third hurricane of the 2018 season and the first to form since July 12, when Hurricane Chris dissipated in the Atlantic Ocean, according to Phil Klotzbach, a research scientist in the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University.
