Sharif, the brother of former PM Nawaz Sharif, was arrested on charges of corruption relating to a low-priced housing scheme in Punjab province, said Shahzad Saleem, the head of a regional anti-corruption body.

The protesters reminded that Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Safdar and Captain (r) Safdar were arrested before the general elections but were released afterwards as nothing could be proved against them. "He was arrested after he failed to satisfy the investigator for his alleged role in awarding contracts to his favorite firm in violations of rules in the Ashiana Housing scheme and Punjab Saaf Pani Company".

Hundreds of PML-N supporters gathered outside the court, chanting pro-Sharif slogans as police and soldiers guarded the venue.

Since then, Mr Sharif stayed away from media and political activities and the party leaders defended him by claiming that presently he was in a state of mourning over the death of his wife and that he would soon start his political activities.

He will appear in an accountability court on Saturday, the NAB said. Shehbaz Sharif is being probed in other corruption cases as well.
