Prince Harry and Meghan Markle were on their way to Amsterdam when their £40 million private jet was struck by lightning. After an exhausting 22-hour flight, including a stop over in Singapore, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped off the Qantas Airlines plane, during the early Monday morning hours in Sydney Airport.

That afternoon, Harry and Meghan will also visit a local school.

Just weeks ago the palace revealed the royal couple's full itinerary, setting out every detail of their visits to New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria, before they go on a visit to Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand.

Meghan and Harry's official duties do not start until Tuesday, so the couple have a low-key start to their busy tour. It was initially reported the pair arrived on a British Airways flight.

The Duke and Duchess are in Australia for the Invictus Games, which starts on Saturday in Sydney, but they will also be visiting Melbourne, Dubbo, and Fraser Island. The tour officially begins on October 16 and will finish on October 31.

Prince Harry and Meghan flew to Amsterdam to attend Soho House founder Nick House's 55th birthday party and celebrate the opening of the newest branch of the members' club chain. They'll be joined by representatives from the Invictus Games to take in the "spectacular views" before heading to Taronga Zoo to meet two baby koalas.

The couple will mark the games' launch and closing ceremony in Sydney.
