George H.W. Bush's service dog, Sully, is honored: 'Mission complete'

Sully the dog lay down near the casket and later sat among the disabled Americans gathered to pay their respects to Bush.

The Instagram account for Bush's service dog, Sully, posted a touching photo of the dog in front of Bush's casket with the caption "Mission complete" following the 41st president's death at 94 on Friday. Sully had been trained by America's VetDogs, a nonprofit that provides service dogs.

With Trump due to attend the funeral of President Bush, the nation can expect the Bush family to show "kindness and class" to Trump when he attends the service, according to a former Bush 43 White House official. As a candidate, Trump belittled Bush's son Jeb, a Republican rival for the presidency, and has long criticised the Iraq War launched by George W. Bush.

Melania represented the current White House. Trump tweeted of the funeral ceremonies, which opened in Texas and came to Washington on Monday, with Bush lying in state at the Capitol until the Washington National Cathedral service.

His body will return to Houston on Wednesday evening and will lie in repose at St. Martin's Episcopal Church until Thursday morning when he will be eulogized during a funeral at the church. He will be buried alongside Barbara Bush, his wife of 73 years who died in April.

He insists Bush's passing marks the end of an era.

Trump has ordered the federal government to close on Wednesday and both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq will be closed in observance.
