First Iowa flu death of season reported

Dr Kevin Kelleher, HSE Assistant National Director for Public Health, told Independent.ie that two people were confirmed to have died as a result of the virus while two more deaths are expected to have occurred as a result of it.

On Friday, Iowa recorded its first flu-related death of the season. The state department of health is tracking the flu this year. By that season's end, the state logged more than 6,400 hospitalizations, along with 435 deaths.

With the news, the health unit is reminding residents it's not too late to get a flu shot.

Healthcare workers are also advised to avail of the vaccine in order to protect both themselves and those that they care for.

The sooner you get the flu vaccine, the better.

So far in Minnesota's 2018-19 flu season, there have been 116 hospitalizations and four deaths in total.
