Manny Machado is the wild card here.

The Yankees are nearly certainly out on Machado after signing Troy Tulowitzki and DJ LeMahieu, so the mystery team is likely one that hasn't been reported previously.

For the Yankees to truly be out on Machado at this point, he'd have to have offers in hand from the White Sox and Phillies that he knows he would be comfortable accepting, and also he'd have to know that the Yankees definitely will not be approaching those offers.

After a face-to-face meeting in Las Vegas with Bryce Harper, his agent Scott Boras and his wife Kayla on Saturday, the Philadelphia Phillies have emerged as "the clear-cut favorite" to sign Harper, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. He entered the season as a coveted free agent, but things have not moved as quickly as many had expected. The report states they appear to have turned their focus to Machado and recently made him a $200 million offer.

LeMahieu is the latest addition to the Yankees' roster during a busy offseason for general manager Brian Cashman.

"We really got to see the man", Middleton said.

"Everything is still on the table", one industry source said, "especially in this new age of free agency where not everything makes sense". "We watched the player play for years, but we got to understand the man, we got to understand what he'd be like in the dugout, the clubhouse and the community". Even popular stars such as Chris Sale couldn't make fans come out to watch a subpar product on the field.

In other words, the Phillies either accidentally landed a potential Machado bargaining piece or are making a not-so-subtle push to get the All-Star's attention three weeks after hosting him at Citizens Bank Park. Both work out with and are close friends of Machado. It seemed like a pipe dream that either would wind up on the South Side.
