He has cut short his Christmas break and is returning to Westminster to deal with what he described as a "major incident" unfolding in waters off the south coast of England.

It comes after six men, all Iranian nationals, were found on a beach next to an inflatable boat at Kingsdown on Sunday.

Home Secretary Sajid Javid has called the crossings a "major incident" and reached out to French officials for more coordination.

But he resisted calls to deploy more cutters to the Channel, saying he was keeping the number of vessels available to the Border Force "under close review".

Mr Javid is under pressure to "get a grip" on the issue of migrants attempting to cross the English Channel amid criticism over the Government's response.

Almost 70 people have been intercepted in the past three days as they try to reach England by crossing one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.

Matt Crittenden, of the Littlestone-on-Sea lifeboat station, told AFP its search and rescue helicopter had spotted them and alerted police.

Shadow home secretary Diane Abbott accused Mr Javid of exploiting the problem.

One French MP said smugglers were using uncertainty over Brexit to make false assertions to migrants that they should cross now as security will be tighter later.
